Alternative CNG & LNG Fuel Filtration

September 2010

Product HighlightCompressed and Liquefied Natural Gas (CNG and LNG) are becoming more popular alternative fuels every year. Compressed Natural Gas is made by compressing natural gas to less than 1% of its volume at standard atmospheric pressure. Liquefied Natural Gas is made by cooling natural gas to about -260°F (-162.2°C) at standard atmospheric pressure resulting in the condensation of the gas into a liquid form.

Increasing fuel prices have led to more interest in these alternative fuels. CNG/LNG costs less than diesel and gasoline with up to 90% less emissions depending on the make and model of the application. LNG fuel systems are normally only used in heavy-duty applications.

The U.S. Department of Energy Alternative Fuels and Advanced Data Center currently recognizes thirty-six heavy-duty applications using CNG/LNG as an alternative fuel. Typical heavy-duty applications using CNG/LNG are buses, street sweepers, waste haulers and other municipal applications.

Of the applications currently available in the marketplace, Baldwin Filters offers 94% lube and fuel filter coverage. Our BF7695 is used as the CNG/LNG fuel filter on 90% of the available applications, and 100% of Class 8 CNG/LNG-powered trucks. Some applications have an in-tank fuel filter that is not a serviceable part.

As demands for CNG/LNG increase in the near future, look for more applications to be using natural gas filters.
